The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Bohol has approved last Tuesday a Resolution urging local government units, barangay, municipal and city in the province to make backyard vegetable gardening in every household of their respective turfs compulsory.
This came after Vice-Gov. Julius Caesar Herrera has authored and introduced the measure in a bid to realize his signature issue on food security. “It’s about time to put substance to our call for backyard gardening on vegetables and other crops,: said Herrera, who chairs the agriculture committee of the SP.
Herrera was acting governor when the measure was approved during the regular session Tuesday last week presided over by senior board member Cesar Tomas Lopez. The said Resolution was sponsored by the agriculture vice-chair Ma. Fe Camacho Lejos and committee member Josil E. Trabajo.
In his Resolution, the vice-governor said the province is committed to always spearhead efforts towards the development of agriculture sector considering that Bohol is a prime eco-tourism destination and a strong agro-industrial province touted as food basket of Central Visayas.
“The agricultural thrusts of the Province are intended to increase production, food security and sufficiency and raise the incomes of the farmers using appropriate technology” the Resolution said.
The vice-governor said that backyard gardening in every household also tries to cushion the impact of spiraling prices of basic commodities, thereby spurring local economy.
Herrera’s call for backyard gardening has started to gain support from some LGUs in the province.
Just recently, the municipalities of Antequera and Catigbian headed by Mayors Cecil Rebosura and Bert Salinas, respectively, successfully made unprecedented move by making backyard gardening mandatory for their respective constituencies. (RVO)
